Trump political operation turns inward after advisers' foreign consulting controversy

Internal blame and possible personnel change reported by Reuters; White House disputes the account; no announced firing, legal violation or ethics finding

Donald Trump

Reuters reports that President Donald Trump is questioning campaign spending and blaming senior political aides as Republican midterm prospects weaken. Citing three people familiar with internal discussions, Reuters says much of the friction centers on James Blair, who oversees MAGA Inc., and White House chief of staff Susie Wiles. The report says Trump's concern includes Blair's early-October paid consulting trip with Chris LaCivita to Republika Srpska while Blair was also overseeing the Republican midterm effort. The internal blame, Wiles' alleged approval of the trip and assessments of Blair's future are attributed to unnamed sources; they are not official findings or confirmed personnel actions.

Response / context

Trump publicly defended Wiles on October 16, calling her smart and tough and saying she would remain in her job. White House spokesman Davis Ingle rejected Reuters' source characterization as baseless speculation; Wiles did not respond to Reuters. Blair called the infighting ridiculous and counterproductive and said he and Trump were focused on helping Republicans win. LaCivita said criticism from unnamed sources was not worth answering. Reuters reported that public records put MAGA Inc.'s campaign spending at about $200 million so far. The FEC's public committee summary, however, currently covers only January 1, 2025 through August 31, 2026 and lists $32.4 million in total disbursements, $2.5 million in independent expenditures and $415.8 million cash on hand; the FEC cautions that newly filed summary data can take up to 48 hours to appear and that its displayed independent-expenditure total excludes 24- and 48-hour reports. The Ledger therefore has not independently reconciled Reuters' more current $200 million figure. No reviewed source establishes that the foreign consulting was unlawful or that an official ethics body found a conflict.
