Reading and searching
Google AdSense code is included on reading pages. Optional Google Analytics visit measurement is available. Newsletter signup and public comment forms are not active. Site search and filters operate in your browser; the publication does not receive those searches through a search service.
Optional visit measurement
If you choose Allow measurement, this site loads Google Analytics to measure page views, campaign referrals and selected link clicks. Google receives technical request information, including your IP address and browser information, and may store Analytics cookies. The publisher receives reports about use of the site. We disable Google signals and advertising personalization in this Analytics connection, and do not send search text, contribution amounts or contact details as Analytics events.
Your choice is stored on this browser. Select Visit measurement settings in the footer to change it; declining stops further Analytics collection and clears its first-party cookies on this domain. Hosting and external services
The hosting provider may process technical request information to deliver and protect the site. The stylesheet requests fonts from Google Fonts, which creates a connection from your browser to that service. Source links open third-party websites with their own privacy practices.
Reader contributions
Support links open the publisher’s external payment page. The payment provider processes payment details under its own privacy terms and may provide the publisher with transaction and donor information for receipts and support. Card details are not entered on the Ledger.
Sharing and email
Share buttons open Facebook, X, Bluesky, Reddit or WhatsApp with the page link and, where supported, prepared text. These services receive the shared link and any included text when opened; their own privacy practices apply. Device sharing and copy-link controls are also available. Nothing posts automatically: you choose whether to publish or send. When the publication mailbox is available, email contact links open your mail app. If you choose to send an email, the publisher and email providers receive the information you send; correspondence is used to handle the inquiry. No response time or deletion schedule is promised here.
Google advertising and your choices
Reading pages load Google AdSense, which connects your browser to Google. Google may receive technical information such as your IP address, browser details and the page visited. Whether ads appear depends on site approval, account settings and applicable consent choices.
Third-party vendors, including Google, may use cookies to show ads based on earlier visits to this website or other websites. Google’s advertising cookies allow Google and its partners to personalize ads across participating sites. Other participating ad networks may also use cookies.
You can manage personalized advertising through Google My Ad Center and participating vendors’ choices through YourAdChoices. These choices do not necessarily remove all ads.
